BIBLE READING: PSALM 41:9; ZECHARIAH 13:6-7; PSALM 55:12-14; JOHN 15:14-15

“Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place– Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him.” Job 2:11(NKJV)

Friendship is one of the most misunderstood and abused concepts in life. The sad truth is that many people cannot identify the fine line between friends and acquaintances. The Bible tells us clearly that “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” (Prov.17:17) In other words, genuine friends stay committed to their own friends through thick and thin.

There is a subtle difference between being friendly with some and being friends with others. The former refers to congeniality i.e., the ability to socialize and get along with the vast majority of people. The latter, on the other hand, focuses on the building of alliances and fellowships. (see Prov. 18:24b) Being friendly requires diplomacy and common ground but making true friends requires compatibility of purpose and vision like the case of Mary and Elizabeth. (see Lk. 1:39-56)

Genuine friendship creates intimacy which in turn creates vulnerability. This is one of the major reasons treachery at the hands of a friend is extremely heartbreaking just like the case of Judas’ betrayal of the Lord Jesus: “Immediately he went up to Jesus and said “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.” (Matt. 26:49-50)

Genuine friends enhance your value and help to refine you. In life, there are three kinds of people who come your way:

(1.) Those who come for a reason.
(2.) Those who come for a season.
(3.) Those who come for a lifetime.

A genuine friend is someone who either possesses something you desire or desires something you possess. Beware of those who claim to be friends but are on a mission to corrupt you. (see 1Cor. 15:33) Friends are destiny helpers and allies who assist you in reaching your destination. The Lord grant us the discernment to identify them at every point.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we ascribe all the Glory to You. O Lord, please help us choose the right friends who will act as boosters of our destinies in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
