DEALING WITH THE ORPHAN SPIRIT
BIBLE READING: JOHN 14:18; ROMANS 8:15; LUKE 15:25-32
“Then Jacob made a vow, saying “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, dlso that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s House, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.” Genesis 28:20-22(NKJV).
One of the worst mindsets anyone claiming to be a son can have is a servant’s mentality. According to the Scriptures, every genuine son has an inheritance within his father’s house:
“Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers…”(Prov.19:14a). This is a fact and there is no extra work required from any true son to earn his inheritance. Unfortunately, there are some who adopt a transactional approach in their dealings with their fathers, believing they are under an obligation to go the extra mile to qualify for what is legally theirs. This is a manifestation of the orphan spirit, which short-circuits the fullness of the father’s graciousness. The Bible makes us understand that we have a rich heritage as genuine sons: “O Lord, You are the Portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance.”* (Psalm 16:5-6).
If everything you possess came as a result of your ability to “wheel-and-deal” rather than pure grace, then you are very much under the influence of the orphan spirit. For the sake of clarity, it is needful to emphasise that there is a difference between a servant and a son that serves i.e., the former has a transactional mindset while the latter views his service as an expression of his love for his father as well as having an ownership mentality as far as his father’s business is concerned (see Luke 2:49). The Lord rid us of the orphan spirit and grant us the boldness to step fully into our inheritance.
O Lord, please open our eyes to our rightful place in our father’s house. Cause us to be free of the orphan spirit in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
