FROM CHILDHOOD TO SONSHIP
BIBLE READING: ROMANS 8:15-16; JOHN 5:19-20, 30
“Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:1-6(KJV).
Everything in life obeys the law of progression. That’s why it is said that the only constant thing in life is change. Nothing stays the same. Everything is in a journey from one stage to the other. The subject of sonship in the kingdom reflects this same principle. A child is born and then he or she begins the journey towards maturity, responsibility and sonship.
From the passage in Galatians chapter 4:1-6, we see five distinct components that define the journey from childhood to sonship: Childhood, Servanthood, Tutelage, Adoption and Sonship.
At the childhood stage we are under the elements of this world, not knowing our right from our left. Without the protective care and nurture of parents, most children will perish. Then after we have been nurtured to a point our training begins, and that’s when the child or heir differs nothing from servants due to the gap in maturity. The training goes into full swing with the introduction of tutors, governors, mentors, coaches, teachers, trainers, etc.
This training is what matures the child and transforms him or her into a well-rounded mature, responsible and capable individual. It is at this stage that adoption takes place which is the conferring of the full rights and privileges of a son, the access to his inheritance and the responsibility to carry on the mandate of the father. Nothing should be more important to any individual than to complete this process of transition from childhood to sonship. A person who aborts this journey becomes a bastard and one of those accidents of destiny.
Timothy completed this journey which was why Paul referred to him as a dearly beloved son. Joshua completed this journey, Jesus completed it and so did many others. And so will you if you stay the course and remain faithful to the process.
Lord God, You have chosen to bestow on us the privilege of adoption as sons. Make us dearly beloved sons to You, our Heavenly Father and to the fathers you have given us in this life. Grant us the grace to complete the process and journey from Childhood to Sonship in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
