FROM REVIVAL TO REFORMATION
BIBLE READING: JOEL 2:18-32; HOSEA 10:12
“If My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sins and heal their land.” (2Chronicles 7:14)
The primary evidence of any genuine revival in any community or society is societal transformation. The Scripture tells us that “Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.”(Prov. 14:34) In other words, the fire of revival is always accompanied by the rain of righteousness which leads to wholesale reformation.
The Lord Jesus Christ during His Sermon on the Mount declared that we are the salt of the Earth and the light of the world. (see Matt.5:13-16) Light stands for revelation, illumination and a sudden outburst of innovation or breakthrough ideas. Salt, on the other hand, refers to values, moral reticence and integrity which all strengthen the reputation of any people. Throughout history, we see the moral effects certain revivals have had on different nations. Take Germany for instance: The average German prior to the Reformation of Martin Luther in the early 16th century was an unrepentant drunkard which left their economy in tatters. Shortly afterwards, they were at the forefront of the industrial revolution and became the epitome of discipline. The same applied to England prior to the Great Awakening championed by John and Charles Wesley. The average Englishman was extremely lazy before then but ever since the revival of that period they have been modeling diligence amongst other virtues.
The value of a nation’s wealth is determined by the wealth of the nation’s values. Revival is never an end but rather a means to an end. The connecting bridge between revival and restoration is reformation. In other words, every genuine revival leads to both personal and societal transformation which always exalts nations in the midst of their peers.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the Rain of Revival. May the wave of righteousness and values overwhelm our nation, making us reference points worthy of emulation in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
