HOW TO END THE YEAR PROPERLY 5 (BLESS YOUR PARENTS)
BIBLE READING: GENESIS 27:1-46
“Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother – this is the first commandment with a promise” – Ephesians 6: 2 (AMP)
It was stated in a previous devotional that a great way to end the year is by applying radically God’s principles of honour. The next principle of honour we will discuss is honouring our parents.
Honouring our parents goes beyond reverence to actually giving them material and financial gifts. As Christians we have two kinds of parents namely:
(a) Our Spiritual Parents
(b) Our Natural Parents
“Moreover, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we yielded [to them] and respected [them for training us]. Shall we not much more cheerfully submit to the Father of spirits and so [truly] live? Hebrews 12:9 (AMP)
Our spiritual parents represent God in the fathering of our spirits while our natural parents were the means by which we were legally permitted to be born into the earth. There are Biblical reasons why we need to honour our parents:
1) We honour our parents in obedience to God’s Word: “Regard (treat with honor, due obedience, and courtesy) your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land the Lord your God gives you.” Exodus 20:12 (AMP)
Blessing your parents with material gifts is not based on whether your parents deserve it or have earned your respect. It is based on whether or not you choose to obey God’s word over your own thinking and feelings. By honouring your parents you are really honouring God. You are submitting to His will and trusting in God’s wisdom over your own will and understanding.
2) We honour them because God gave us life through them: “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother’s experience when she is old. So give your parents joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.” Proverbs 23:22,25 (NLT).
No matter the circumstances of your conception, and despite your father’s or mother’s weaknesses and failings, you are expected to respect and bless them with material things. When you respect God’s gift of life to you through your father and mother, you are honouring God.
3) Honouring our parents releases longevity and prosperity to us: “And this is the promise: If you honor your father and mother, “you will live a long life, full of blessing.” Ephesians 6:3 (NLT)
Believers die prematurely and struggle in life and ministry because of the violation of this principle of honour. When we bless our spiritual parents we also enjoy longevity and prosperity in ministry and we step into our spiritual inheritance.
The blessings of our parents are as powerful as the blessings of God. God confirms their words over our lives especially after their soul is moved to bless us because we honoured them with material and financial gifts.
The blessing from the soul is usually very powerful. A typical example was seen in our Bible reading when Isaac demanded venison such as he loved from his first son Esau so that his soul may bless him. “Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.” Gen. 27:3-4(KJV)
Jacob the second son of Isaac brought his venison earlier than Esau and got the Blessing(Gen. 27:25, 27-29). Then he left his father’s house out of fear because of his brother Esau. He left with nothing physical but he had the Blessing and finally came back with great abundance and dominion.
We have a covenant responsibility to bless both our spiritual and natural parents.
Prepare a sacrificial gift this month and give to both your spiritual and natural parents.
I declare that as I honour and bless my spiritual and natural parents, that I will step into new levels of grace and dominion in my life and ministry in Jesus Name Amen.
