MEDITATE ON THESE THINGS
BIBLE READING: ROMANS 12:1-2; EPHESIANS 4:17-24
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8(NKJV)
The word “meditate” means to “think about something” or to “dwell on something.” It also means to “regard” something in our minds or to “reason”—to think about it deeply and ponder it carefully. It suggests a deliberate choice we make to consciously “consider” something in our thinking, to take it apart and examine it, and to linger over it so that it ‘sinks in.’
Very few of us are intentional about what we give focused attention to. We live in a world that is saturated with various forms of entertainment, time-consuming games and negative information on social media. Such information could be incredibly distracting and have long term damaging effects on our lives and this is pathetic because the Bible calls us to be a thinking people—a people who are intentional about what it is that we give focused attention to. Infact, unless we allow God to sanctify and truly transform the way we think through meditation on the Word of God, all the other areas of our lives cannot be brought into conformity to His good will for us (Romans 12:1-2).
As believers, we should be careful what we give attention to, therefore, it is our responsibility to put the right materials into our minds by meditating on them. We are to, as a regular pattern of life, meditate on the Word of God, because doing so consistently transforms the way we live. And that is how we are to put the joy of the Lord to work in our lives.
Philippians 4:8 lists the type of things we should meditate on. Meditate on the Word of Truth. Meditate on that which characterises someone as honourable or noble; we must be careful who we admire as our role models in life. We should focus on what is good, equitable, and upright in our relationship with other people. We are to give our focused attention to things that are pure in the sight of God. We should give focused consideration to what constitutes good and gracious manners. We are to put the motives of people in the best light because God wants us to have a positive mind set. We should not allow anything contrary to the Word of God to dwell in your thought processes so that we can think like Christ.
Heavenly Father, I pray that by the blood of Jesus Christ, You wash me clean from every sin and that as I meditate on Your Word, You will cleanse my mind and transform it so that I will know Your will and do it in Jesus Name.
I do not have the spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.
