MINISTRY OF ADMINISTRATION

BIBLE READING: LUKE 9:13-17; ACTS 6:1-7; 1 CORINTHIANS 12:27-28; 14:40

“Then Jesus said “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.” John 6:10(NKJV)

According to Acts 6:1-7, the first crisis that hit the Church was an administrative crisis. The success or failure of any Church is hinged on the proper administration of the business and organisational aspects of its Ministry. The twenty-first century Church has been catapulted into arenas that were hardly accessed few years ago. The Church now offers more than a Sanctuary and a sermon. The twenty-first century Church is now a conglomerate offering more than spiritual growth and development. She provides day care centres, helps those coping with divorce, supports widows and single mothers, helps youths with drug rehabilitation, provides training institutes such as vocational training, economic development or business incubation just to mention but a few. All these facets require called, gifted and trained human resource management personnel to run them in order to achieve the Purpose of the Church.

Administration is no longer just for those who have time to spare. It is now both a calling and a job. Like every other calling, it must be grown and developed and like every other job, must have prerequisite qualifications and targeted trainings for effectiveness.

Administration is the liaison between the pastorate, the staff and the congregation. Therefore, Church administrators should be trained and equipped before given the responsibility of administration. The administration of a Church must be handled with a corporate view in order to ensure that the Church is run like a multi-national organisation irrespective of its size. Administrators should be business savvy in order to deal with the complex nature of the twenty-first century Church.

Oftentimes, the Church leadership tries to shy away from practices that appear business like (see Luke 2:49). The Church must be run like an efficient organisation. While the Church is a Living Organism— a Living, Breathing Institution established by God to affect the world— it still must be run in an organised order to be completely effective and maintain integrity (see 1 Cor.14:40).

In Luke 9:13-17, the disciples helped Jesus to administer the people before ministering to them. It was only when the people were seated orderly that multiplying and serving of bread took place. An administrator should have a well rounded business background and the ability to integrate that knowledge into the uniqueness of that Church environment. Those that administer the Church should have excellent communication skills. Administrators of a Church have many responsibilities. Pastoring a Church and running a Church are two different businesses i.e., pastors are leaders while administrators are managers. The Church needs someone watching over Her Business while the pastor watches over the Sheep.

PRAYERS:

Father, help the leadership of the Church to recognize, release and train saints that are called and gifted to administer the Church for greater effectiveness in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
