PRESERVING THE MASTER’S LEGACY

BIBLE READING: JOHN 17:6-19; MARK 16:11-15

I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. John 17:20-21(NKJV)

After a person dies, the mark the individual left on the world represents that individual’s legacy. While a person’s legacy can include money, the concept of legacy is much larger than the value of an individual’s estate. It is about the richness of that person’s life, including what he accomplished, and the impact he or she had on people and places.

The impact of an individual is left as a legacy for the next generation. It is a form of an inheritance transmitted to the coming generation that will enable the new generation to keep faith and preserve the inheritance that was passed on to them. The Psalmist acknowledged that it is by passing on of Legacies that the Wonders of God and His miracles can be perpetuated to make that generation put their trust in Him (Psalms 78:3-7).

In as much as Jesus’ Life was so impactful that it can never be fully documented, He still took a good part of ministry time to spend with His disciples knowing fully well that the Legacies He left must be transmitted to the next generation by these few individuals. Apostle Paul in his second letter to his protégé Timothy said that, for the continuity of Redemption Endowments, able and faithful men and women must of a necessity be enabled (2 Timothy 2:2).

Discipleship is the process of enabling able and faithful men to preserve the Legacy of our Lord Jesus. By discipling people, Jesus passed on Knowledge, Wisdom, Grace and other Intangible Resources to His disciples and the next generation of believers.
Everyone influences others in some way, including friends, aquintances, co-workers and neighbours. The only guaranteed way to ensure the continuity of the Legacy of the Master and of any organisation is by discipleship.

Any generation that fails to disciple the next will truncate the Legacy of the Master and that of former generations. According to Judges 2:10 When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel. This Scripture is a classic example of what a lack of discipleship can cost a nation, ministry, organisation or even a family.

PRAYER:
Lord, help me to grasp the importance of preserving Your Legacies through rigorous discipleship making in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
