REDIGGING THE WELLS OF OUR FATHERS
BIBLE READING: GENESIS 26:15-18; MATTHEW 4:17; JOHN 5:19-20
“The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, And the God of Peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9 (NKJV).
Every genuine son understands that he has no personal mandate of his other than the mandate of his father. In other words, one major job of a son is to protect, preserve and propagate his father’s legacy rather than his own. A typical example of this is seen when God transferred Moses’ mandate upon Joshua his servant: “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the Law which Moses My Servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.” (Josh.1:7).
Consider this thought: The Lord gave no new set of instructions to Joshua other than those He had given Moses. In the same vein, true sons hear from God when their father speaks.
Isaac understood the importance of perpetuating the legacy of his father Abraham. Even though he must have had his own ideas regarding suitable locations and names for the wells he planned to dig, he chose to redig Abraham’s wells and leave their names unchanged according to Scripture: “And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.” (Gen.26:18).
One of the greatest fallacies in most Charismatic circles is the notion of an “original anointing.” Brethren, there is no such thing. The Lord instructed Moses to take of the Spirit which was upon HIM (Moses) and put it upon THEM (the seventy elders). Every minister has a “borrowed anointing” which was transferred from someone else (see Num. 11:16-17). Genuine sons would rather find the paths of their fathers than blaze a fresh trail for themselves. May we redig the wells of our fathers as we heed the Lord’s Timeless Call to us, saying, “Thus says the Lord, “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls.” (Jer.6:16a).
Father in Heaven, we exalt You. O Lord, help us locate the ancient landmarks and redig the wells of our fathers for their legacy is ours. We thank You for this in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
