SHEPHERDS AFTER MY HEART
BIBLE READING: PSALM 78:70-72; JOHN 10:1-30
I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the Lord. Jer. 23:4 (NKJV).
When God wants to ensure the growth of believers, one of the things He does is to give them a shepherd, one who will guide and direct them in the way of the Lord. A God-given shepherd will help the people in times of fear and instill faith back into them, keeping them together.
Our pastors and leaders represent shepherds in our lives. As long as they know the Heart of God, it is their duty to communicate it to the people. The more the people understand the Heart of God, the more growth they will experience in life. God in Jeremiah 3:15-16 (MSG) said, I’ll give you good shepherd-rulers who rule My Way, who rule you with intelligence and wisdom. “And this is what will happen: You will increase and prosper in the land. The time will come”—God’s Decree!—” when no one will say any longer, ‘Oh, for the good old days! Remember, the Ark of the Covenant?’ It won’t even occur to anyone to say it —’the good old days.’ The so-called good old days of the Ark are gone for good.
The same way mothers feed their babies and they are able to grow, the shepherds over us feed us the Good Word of God to guide us in our growth. Isaiah 40:11 says, He will feed His Flock like a Shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His Arm, and carry them in His Bosom, and gently lead those who are with young.
Likewise, Ezekiel 34:22-23 says, Therefore I will save My Flock and they shall no longer be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will establish One Shepherd over them, and He shall feed them—My Servant David. He shall feed them and be their Shepherd.
The shepherd after the Heart of God does not neglect any sheep as everyone of God’s people is as special as another. Like our Lord Jesus Christ, the shepherd gives his life for the good of his flock — So he spake this parable to them, saying: What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ Luke 15: 3-6.
Thank You, Father, for the shepherd You have placed over my life as a guide. I pray that You teach me Your Ways. I pray for the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding upon our pastors and leaders. I pray You give them the heart of a shepherd in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
