THE CHURCH GROWS DEEPER THROUGH DISCIPLESHIP
BIBLE READING: ISAIAH 37:31; MATTHEW 7:24-27
“The seeds that fell on rocky ground stand for those who hear the message and receive it gladly. But it does not sink deep into them; they believe only for a while but when the time of testing comes, they fall away.”(Luke 8:13 Good News Translation)
The Church of Jesus Christ is much more than just a religious organization. The Church is actually the number one Institute of Transformation that radically changes lives for the better. Apostle Paul aptly described the Church as “the House of God, which is the Church of the Living God, the Pillar and Ground of the Truth.” (1Timothy 3:15) Put in other words, the Body of Christ or the Church is actually the School of the Spirit where believers get established in Truth, thereby acquiring a deeper experience in the Things of God.
Rick Warren, the senior pastor of Saddleback Church, gave a striking job description of the Church in his bestselling book “The 5 Purposes of the Church. “He said that the Church of Jesus Christ:
grows stronger through worship.
grows larger through missions.
grows warmer through fellowship.
grows deeper through discipleship.
grows broader through ministry.
In other words, the degree of discipleship you have gone through as a Christian determines the depth of your Christianity. Unfortunately, we have too many shallow believers today who quickly shrivel at the slightest sign of trials, much like the seed sown on the stony ground (see Mark 4:5-6) Christlikeness can only be achieved through discipleship which itself is the Heart of the Great Commission.
When the Lord Jesus wanted to reward Simon Peter for lending Him his boat as a preaching platform,He gave him a vital instruction: “When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”” (Luke 5:4). Herein lies a crucial point: Jesus is speaking likewise to all believers today. The shallow waters may suffice if all you are after are mackerels and other little fish. That is not the case if you really want to catch the sharks, dolphins and octopuses that dwell in the deep waters. Deeper Christian experiences in God’s Wisdom, Power and Presence are available only to those Christians willing to go through the journey of genuine discipleship.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for giving us such a Solid Foundation. O Lord, please help us go deeper into Your Will and Your Ways through the Discipleship Process. We exalt You for this in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.
