THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HIS GIFTS
BIBLE READING: ACTS 1:8; MATTHEW 3:16-17; JOHN 7:37-39
“There are diversities of Gifts, but the Same Spirit.” (1Corinthians 12:4)
The Church of Jesus Christ has one primary mandate, and that is to disciple the nations of the Earth. Discipleship results in the churning out of Christlike believers who showcase His Personality and His Functionality. (see Romans 8:28-30) However, it is impossible to disciple anyone without the Grace of God infused by the Power of the Holy Spirit. In other words, it is the Job of the Holy Spirit to draw men closer to the Lord through the Agency of His Gifts or Manifestations.
In order to understand Who the Holy Spirit is and what He can do, it is imperative to note what He is not. For example, we have established the Truth that He is a Person rather than a mere force. Also, He is not a Fire but He refines like fire. He is not a Wind but He moves like the Wind. (see John 3:8) Another common misconception about the Holy Spirit as a result of misinterpreting the events after Jesus’ Baptism is that He takes up the Form of a Dove, as seen in the Gospel according to Matthew chapter three verse sixteen:
“When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the Heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.”
If you carefully examine the phrase “the Spirit of God descending like a dove”(emphasis mine), you will notice the reference to a figure of speech known as a simile i.e. for comparison. In other words, the Holy Spirit is not a Dove but shares the following characteristics with a dove:
(1.) He is Focused: The dove is so focused on whatever it looks at per time that it cannot see anything fractions of an inch next to it.
(2.) He is Loyal: The dove is so loyal that it has only one partner or spouse for life, even after the latter’s death.
(3.) He is Gentle: The dove is so gentle that it alights so softly that there is no sound or feeling of its feet.
The Holy Spirit equips believers with His Various Manifestations known as the Gifts of the Spirit “given to each one for the profit of all.”(1Corinthians 12:7b) The onus therefore lies upon us to understand Him and His Dynamics, yielding to whatever Gifts He would have us use for the showcasing of His Glory.
Heavenly Father, we appreciate You for the Gift of the Holy Spirit. O Lord, we yield to the Manifestations of the Spirit that the hearts of men may be turned to You alone in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
