THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: HIS WILL
BIBLE READING: 1CORINTHIANS 12:7-11
“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” Romans 12:5-11(NKJV).
We are still discussing the Dynamic Personality and the Unique Human Features of the Holy Spirit which are inexhaustible. The Holy Spirit has an awesome Personality that is Excellent and Matchless when compared to man. We have highlighted the components of man’s Soul i.e., his mind, will and emotions. Today, we are looking at the “Will” component of man that is also uniquely exhibited by the Holy Spirit, as a surety that He is a Person and not a figment of our imagination.
The Scripture reveals that the Holy Spirit as the Administrator of Spiritual Gifts has a Will of what and whom to give: “But that One and the Same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He Wills.” (1Cor. 12:11). He also has an expectation of how the Gifts should be manifested as seen from our key Scripture. So, the Holy Spirit has a Will. He does not come from God the Father simply at God the Father’s Will, but He has a Will of His Own, which is always in keeping with the Will of God, but is, nevertheless, distinct and separate. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is a Person, He is not a mere Influence or Power which we are to use according to our wills, but a Divine Person who desires to use us according to His Will.
Many Christians miss the fullness of Blessing there is because they try to use the Holy Spirit according to their own will, instead of surrendering to Him to be used according to His infinitely Wise Will. The Will of God is Higher and always More Profitable than the Will of man (see Isaiah 55:9).
The Holy Spirit does not only call people into Faith in Jesus Christ, but He also calls us to a specific preordained Will of God. The God of the universe wants to guide you so that your decisions will be in accordance with His Will. Sometimes, our lives will appear to be random connected events tied together, but this is not the case with God. God will direct your steps and guide your life when you commit your plans to Him (see Proverbs 3:4-6). The Holy Spirit also searches the Heart of God to ensure that the Will of God which is often His is executed in our lives. Here are just a few examples:
(1.) The Holy Spirit asked for Barnabas and Saul to be set apart for the work to which He had called them (see Acts 13:2).
(2.) The Holy Spirit led Philip to help an Ethiopian eunuch understand the Old Testament and eventually lead him to Christ (see Acts 8:26–40).
(3.) The Holy Spirit forbade Paul from entering specific regions to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ at that time (see Acts 16:6–7).
The Scripture is replete with the Truth about the Personality of the Holy Spirit. It is therefore important to ascertain the Will of God on every issue and thereafter subject your will to God’s Will to walk in God’s preordained plan for you as we are admonished in Romans 12:2; “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect Will of God.”
Father, I thank You for the Holy Spirit Whom You freely gave to Me to help me navigate through the issues of life. I ask for Grace to subject my will to His Will in every aspect of my life so that my decisions will align with Your purpose for creating me in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
