THE PRINCIPLE OF HONOUR

BIBLE READING: EXODUS 20:12; PROVERBS 3:9; MATTHEW 13:57; GENESIS 27:1-4

A son honours his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My Honour? And if I am a Master, Where is My Reverence? Says the Lord of hosts To you priests, who despise My Name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your Name?’ Malachi 1:6 (NKJV).

The Principle of Honour is one of those principles that is mentioned in many places in the Scripture. The Bible calls it the First Commandment with a promise. That is not to say that the rest of the Commandments have no promise or reward but that God deemed it so important as to mention and emphasise the Promise that goes with it. (see Eph. 6:2-3)

In a Father-Son Relationship, the Principle of Honour is so vital because it is primarily one of the most important means by which the mandate, blessings, anointings and inheritances of the father is transferred to the son. Isaac at the closing of his life could not just bless Esau his firstborn even though he wanted to. He had to require from him “venison”, something that would gladden the heart of the father and provoke or activate the blessings he carries to be released.

Note that honour is not just verbal acknowledgment or an expression of respect. It begins from the heart but finds expression through tangible manifestations of the degree of regard and worth you place on the father. In other words, honour is substantial (see Prov. 3:9). Jesus rebuked the scribes and Pharisees for disregarding this Principle of Honour (see Matt. 15:1-9). The penalty for dishonour is death. Destiny is aborted and life is cut short. It is not something that should be taken lightly.

PRAYER:

Lord, open our eyes to this principle. May we never be guilty of the sin of dishonour. Help us to always hold our spiritual and biological parents in very high esteem and to honour them appropriately in Jesus’ Name. Amen
