THE PRINCIPLE OF STEWARDSHIP

BIBLE READING: 1 SAMUEL 17:15-20; ACTS 20:28

Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. 1 Samuel 17:34-35 (NKJV).

A steward is usually entrusted with the resources of another for proper and effective management after which the owner will come and inspect and possibly reward or punish as the case may be.

Apart from the need for an object of affection upon whom He could shower His love, one of the major reasons God made man was for the purpose of stewardship according to Genesis 2:15-17; Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may eat freely; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

The Almighty God as our Father has entrusted us with time, talents, our bodies and even people with whom we are to properly relate for His Glory as people who will account for them all. Romans 14:12 says: So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
John 17:12 is a record of the Lord Jesus praying to the Father saying: While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your Name. Those Whom You gave Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

Amazingly, God also entrusted us with His Mysteries of which we must be accountable and therefore administer same as expected of us.1Corinthians 4:1-2 says; Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.

The principle of stewardship shows that a son carries the burden of his father and does not seek his own. A son has ownership of the father’s vision or assignment. He lays aside his own ambition and takes his father’s burden. A son does not run his own agenda but rather abandons his ambition. John 4:34 says; Jesus said to them, My Food is to do the Will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His Work. Also, the Lord Jesus clearly stated in John 5:30: I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My Own Will, but the Will of the Father which hath sent Me.

All that burned in the Heart of Jesus as the Son of God was to fulfill God the Father’s Mandate. The Vision of God was what moved the Heart of Jesus according to John 6:38-40: For I have come down from Heaven, not to do My Own Will, but the Will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him Who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him, may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

PRAYER POINT:

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for being ever faithful to me. I ask that You make me into a person that You can trust. I ask for the grace to be faithful to You and to hold on to Your Words dearly in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
