THE SPIRIT OF COUNSEL
BIBLE READING: JOSHUA 9:1-16; 2 SAMUEL 21:1-9; DANIEL 2:14-23
Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask Counsel of the LORD. Joshua 9:14 (NKJV).
The Spirit of Counsel is very important especially for the days that we live in because it will make you a very exceptional person and free of unnecessary mistakes and failures. There is a need for every genuine believer to get to the point whereby “he shall not judge by the sight of his eyes, nor decide by the hearing of his ears.” (Isaiah 11:3b). The Spirit of Counsel is one of the Greatest Answers to the sin of prejudice.
In Joshua 9:1-16, the Israelites were tricked into going into a covenant of protection with the Gibeonites because they did not seek Counsel from the Lord. They believed the deceptive tales the Gibeonites told them after observing them with their mere physical eyes rather than consulting with the Supernatural Eyes of God i.e., The Spirit of Counsel. This was a costly mistake for the Israelites because in later years, they faced famine for three consecutive years under the leadership of King David. The King had to seek the Counsel of the Lord and God told him that the Nation of Israel was faced with famine because King Saul the predecessor of King David had broken covenant when he killed the Gibeonites during his reign. As a result, David was compelled to broker for peace with the Gibeonites to avert the famine and God, Who is Just and a Righteous Judge, informed David that the price for prosperity to return to the land of Israel was that Israel meet the demands of justice required by the Gibeonites which was the death of seven male descendants of King Saul. However, David spared the life of Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan because of his covenant with Jonathan (see 2 Samuel 21:1-9).
We all need help when it comes to decision making and that is what the Spirit of Counsel helps us with. The Holy Spirit is a Guide and a Teacher. He also searches the heart of God to keep us informed when we seek His Counsel according to 1Corinthians 2:10, But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the Deep Things of God.
Proverbs 20:5 says, Counsel in the heart of man is like deep waters but a man of understanding draws it out. When you ask the Lord questions, you will receive clarifications. He guides you when you are studying the Word and His Spirit explains things to you. The Spirit of Counsel helps you in problem solving and ultimately for repositioning your future.
Men like Ahitophel had this Spirit according to 2Samuel 16:23; Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if one had inquired at the Oracle of God. So was all the advice of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom. Like a compass, the Spirit of Counsel shows you the right direction to take and you realise that everything is working out. You won’t make investments that will fail or work into partnerships that will go sour because you will know before hand how such decisions will end. Judges18:5; And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
Father, I ask that You guide me with Your Counsel and direct my path by Your Spirit. Help me to walk in alignment with You and teach me Your Ways. Cause me Lord to not quench Your Spirit I pray in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
