“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all. Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’ Genesis 14:18-23(NKJV)

The concept of tithing is one of the kingdom stewardships that has raised major concerns even though it is an express command in the Scriptures. The Tithe is a tenth part of your income or harvest (Lev. 27:30). The tradition of giving a tenth part of income, produce, and spoils of war to the priests was common in biblical times. In Genesis 14, Abraham was returning from a battle in which he fought to rescue Lot his nephew, his household and properties. He defeated four nations that outnumbered him. Through giving the tithes of all, Abraham disconnected from dependence on the economy and practices of his time. He demonstrated to the king of Sodom that his prosperity was a function of the Kingdom system of his God.

When you tithe, you acknowledge God as the Source of your prosperity because He is the one who gives the power to get and sustain wealth (Deut. 8:18). Tithing is a covenant connector. It is one of the establishing points of your participation in a covenant in which the Father has promised the ability to get wealth. Tithing is a major stewardship principle of the kingdom. Malachi 3:10(NKJV), says, “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house…” In other words, the number one reason God requires that we tithes is that, there may be food in His house. When you neglect tithing you are denying God food in His house. It means that very soon, He will also neglect your house (Haggai 1:6-11).

Tithing is a divine insurance against the unfavourable economic systems of this world. Outside of it, you are at the mercy of markets and economies that are operating in mis-alignment to God’s economy. You pay your tithes to honour God. It brings overflow in your career, business, and creates new relationships and strategies. (Proverbs 3:9-10).

Tithing is a covenant with a Person, our High Priest, the Lord Jesus and not with an institution or organisation (Heb.7:6-8). You do not pay your tithes to Red Cross, Rotary Club, orphanages, or the destitute homes. Your tithe is not charity; God did not leave us with a choice of where to pay it. He said, “Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple -Malachi 3:10 (MSG). The “Temple Treasury” refers to your local church treasury where you are fed, nourished and nurtured with the word of God. These are biblical truths concerning tithing that should guide your covenant relationship with God and not public or social media views about tithing. Study all the scriptures referenced above, and repent from any wrong notion you have had about tithing.

Father, I receive grace to become a committed and faithful tither in the kingdom. In the times I have defaulted, please forgive me as I repent and commit to be a faithful steward going forward in Jesus name, Amen!
