BIBLE READING: ISAIAH 8:16; 2TIMOTHY 2:2
“Immediately they left their nets and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His Example].” Matthew 4:20(AMP)
An understanding of the concept of discipleship is critical as far as Christian productivity is concerned. As a matter of fact, the rapid expansion of Christianity during the First Century AD in the face of severe persecution would have been virtually impossible without discipleship. The Bible tells us that when the twelve Apostles of Jesus wanted to ordain the seven deacons, they summoned “the multitude of disciples” (Acts 6:2). In view of this, it becomes imperative for us to examine closely the subject of discipleship within the Christian context.
Discipleship from the Christian perspective could be defined as the process of making one become like Jesus Christ. Put in a different way, the primary purpose of Christian discipleship is to raise Christlike people (Romans 8:29-30). It involves taking someone on a journey, the end of which results in him falling in love with the Person, Principles and Purpose of Jesus. The Scripture makes this point abundantly clear: “For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” (Romans 14:8).
The discipleship process is the Factory phase of the Christian Faith where people are made to transit from the world’s value system in order to embrace His Value System, abandoning their worldview to adopt His. The Church of Jesus Christ grows deeper through discipleship hence, your spiritual depth is a reflection of your discipleship level. The end result of discipleship is Christlikeness which marks the end of all Spiritual Warfare. No wonder Apostle Paul voiced out his desire to “press on towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14). Hallelujah! The goal of the discipleship process is to raise people to be a clear expression or reflection of Christ Jesus in every respect.
Discipleship is in essence Christian apprenticeship whereby we sit at the Master’s feet, learning His Will and Ways. Our Lord Jesus died as our Substitute but lived (and still lives, Glory to God) as our Example. The onus therefore lies upon us to make it our primary aim to follow His Example in all respects to ensure that “of Him and through Him and for Him are all things, to Whom be Glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36)
Heavenly Father, we exalt Your Holy Name.Thank You for Your desire for us to be transformed and changed into Your Likeness. Reveal to us, O Lord, the true purpose of discipleship in Jesus’ Mighty Name.
