BIBLE READING: ROMANS 8:28-30; 2PETER 3:9; 1TIMOTHY 2:1-6; ROMANS 9:11-25

“But I, when I AM lifted up from the Earth, will draw all men to Myself.” John 12:32 (NIV).

One of the most confusing and controversial concepts in Christianity is the issue of Predestination or Divine Election. This doctrine basically teaches that God in His Sovereignty has drafted out His Master Plan from Eternity Past which distinguishes those called the elect from those called the reprobates (see Rom. 11:7). In other words, some sincere Christians erroneously believe that the Lord God Almighty has ordained before the foundation of the world those to be saved and those to be damned even quoting Scriptures such as John 6:44: “No man can come to me except the Father Who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the Last Day.” The unfortunate thing about taking Scriptures out of context is the reluctance to provide a balanced interpretation which leads to massive deception (see Rom. 9:33).

One major misconception regarding Predestination is the issue of God’s Sovereignty versus His Character i.e., the former referring to His Amoral Attributes (see Isa. 55:8-9) and the latter referring to His Moral Attributes (see Ex. 34:6-7). The Sovereignty of God covers areas such as His Omnipotence, His Omniscience and His Omnipresence. His Character, however, refers to His Nature of Love, Grace, Mercy, Righteousness, Truth etc. For instance, God being the Embodiment of Righteousness (see 1Cor. 1:30) would be seen as unjust if some people were consigned to Eternal Condemnation without being given the opportunity to exercise their free will. Simply put, God’s Sovereignty can never undermine His Character for any reason (see Jam. 1:17).

A wise man once said that “Destiny is a tidal wave that carries away only those who step into it.” The truth about Election or Predestination is that God predestines His Plans and Purposes but NOT man’s conformity to them (see Deut. 30:19-20). The Lord has given to every man the power of choice. He can be likened to a Master Scriptwriter Who already has the plot drawn out. However, the performance of the actors during their audition and the production proper will determine whether or not they would be deemed dispensable. Such is the Wisdom in the Words of Jesus Christ our Lord: “So the last will be first and the first last; for many are called but few chosen” (Matt. 20:16).

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for granting us the opportunity to receive the Gift of Salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. O Lord, please help us maintain a tender conscience before You and work out our own salvation with fear and trembling in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
