WHOSE DISCIPLE ARE YOU?
BIBLE READING: JOHN 21:19-22; MATTHEW 28:16-20
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him,“ If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32(NKJV)
Knowing your identity or Whose you are is fundamental because your Origin or Source contributes to who you become. It is natural for like to beget like and for living things to reproduce after their kind. Man was made in the Image and Likeness of God, your Source. “So God created man in His Own Image; in the Image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27(NKJV). It is logical to assume that since man was made in the Image of God, man should be a replica of the Image of God in his nature, in his thoughts and actions. However, this is not man’s reality because of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden that produced a depraved man who is radically different from the Image of God, hence, the necessity for the Birth, Death, Resurrection, and Discipleship of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In our previous devotional, we established that a disciple of Christ is a disciplined follower of Jesus Christ who is committed to adopting His Lifestyle, Teachings and Values through intimacy with Him. In Mark 3:14, Jesus called ordinary men that they may be with him and learn from Him before deploying them to the field to reap the overripe harvest. The same way Jesus chose His disciples, other great leaders and even the devil recruit and train their disciples to spend time with them, believe in them and thereafter propagate what they believe.
Jesus laid a fundamental foundation by duplicating Himself in His disciples through teachings and practices He imparted to them that transformed their lives. This transformation the disciples of Jesus experienced was not solely in the inner man but was also observed by the society who gave them the label, “Christians” in Antioch, thus, confirming that they were truly like Christ (Acts 11:26).
To many, becoming a disciple of Jesus in the 21st Century requires, joining a Church or joining its work force. Merely identifying with a Church and religiously attending its programmes does not confer the label of a disciple of Christ. The criteria for being a disciple of Jesus has not changed in the 21st Century because the same works the people of Antioch experienced are also expected to be done by the disciples of Jesus even in a greater measure today – “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these He will do because I go to My Father. John 14:12(NKJV).
Your identity does not comprise only of your name or what you believe but more of the acts and good works which God ordained for you in Christ Jesus. To remain a disciple of Jesus, you must spend time with Him in fellowship, abide in the Word of God continually, and be prompt to obey all His commandments. Critically examine your life: Are you truly a disciple of Jesus? (Selah).
Father thank You for the Gift of Your Son Jesus Christ, Who redeemed me and has modelled the life of a true disciple for me.I yield to the ministry of the Holy Spirit in my life and receive grace to be a true disciple of Christ in word and in deed for Your Glory, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
